Patacones are made with green plantains and are a savory appetizer or a side dish. They're very easy to make and extremely addicting.

TIP! When picking the plantains, make sure they're very green.


  • 2-3 large green plantains (not ripe)

  • Vegetable Oil

  • Salt


  1. Peel the plantains carefully. You can cut off the ends and cut a few slits on the each side with a pairing knife to help remove the peels.

  2. Slice the plantains into thick round pieces - about 2 inches thick.

  3. Heat about 1 in of vegetable oil in a pan on medium-high heat

  4. Fry plantains in oil until light golden brown on both sides; remove from the pan and place on a cutting board.

  5. Apply a generous portion of salt to both sides of the plantain.

  6. With the back of a spoon or a small spatula, press down on each plantain until they're completely smashed on each side.

  7. Place all the plantains back into the frying pan and fry on medium-high heat for a few mins. Make sure to flip & move the plantains around while frying so they don't burn.

  8. Remove from the pan and place on a plate with a paper towel to remove any excess oil before. Apply a pinch more of salt before serving.
